Kayelle (From Kayelle’s Return by Paul Alexander Fichera)

Night settled coldly and in silence upon the spires of the Andes Mountains in Peru, South America. Marching north and south and yet a mere fold in the Earth as seen from orbit, their peaks haunted the eastward horizon, standing tall above the barren, arid lands which encroached the Pacific seaboard. The setting sun touched its length a gleaming orange upon its many summits as the day slowly faded amid the shadows in the lowlands below. A ten-thousand year old experiment ended, and from a brooding overlook atop one such peak, fleet commander, Kayelle, paused before his runabout to stare westward to the sun’s slow and nightly demise upon the waters of the Pacific Ocean. For such beauty this world displayed, the thought of leaving hung heavy upon him. He had grown to love the Earth, and the exotic beings that flourished here, in a way that challenged his most aspiring recollections of his parent world of Mandaria, so many light years away in space, and in the star grouping these Earthers had christened, Cetus, the Stellar Sea Monster.
