The labels we place on time and space are in and of themselves arbitrary, based on an agreed on point of inception. There really is 0,0 latitude, but how it came to be is not clear to me (yet).
Technically, the point of 0,0 is fittingly called null island.
How and why it was decided upon is the subject of a little research.
The time and date upon which we label every point in history is arbitrary as well.
If I gave you the date of a significant event in history, say 9/11, then we can calculate the duration from that date.
