Milestones

Ask yourself if the task underway is leading towards a specific milestone. If not, you're spinning your wheels or in discovery mode. It's ok to spend time in discovery - but ultimately, the milestone (the end result) is what makes an impact.

Actions tied to milestones will lead you toward a specific destination.

When you're doing things untied to desired outcomes, you'll feel frustrated as you spin your wheels and waste time & energy (aka fuel).

Achieving milestones can actually feel anticlimatic. Why? Because it happens without effort. The reward is actually in the work to get there.

For myself, working towards milestones has been a key to motivation.

Anything that can be broken down into an achievable incremental step is achievable! The thing is, you have to create steps than can actually be taken and then take them! Milestones are yours to own!

Milestones are the significant outcomes in a project. Use rewards to acknowledge completion.

Labels we typically use:

Which label is the most effective motivator for you? Consider using different labels based on priority. In AuthorDock, I use milestones, but have considered using priorities, commits, and events as well. The main point is that a task doesn't get done without a deadline assigned to it. Deadlines carry more significance when there is a tangible reward associated with it.

Which one motivates you?

Gamify your deep work. A physical artifact. Focus on metrics that drive improvement. Don't break the chain. Sustained consistent effort is the key. What are the KPIs (Key Performance Indicators) for your desired outcomes? The milestones can motivate you, but deep work is essential.
