Step 1: Enter Tasks

Habitica is nothing without real-world goals, so enter a few tasks. You can add more later as you think of them! All tasks can be added by clicking the green "Create" button.

Todos

Set up To-Dos: Enter tasks you do once or rarely in the To-Dos column, one at a time. You can click on the tasks to edit them and add checklists, due dates, and more!

Dailies

Set up Dailies: Enter activities you need to do daily or on a particular day of the week, month, or year in the Dailies column. Click task to edit when it will be due and/or set a start date. You can also make it due on a repeating basis, for example, every 3 days.

Set up Habits: Enter habits you want to establish in the Habits column. You can edit the Habit to change it to just a good habit heavyplussign or a bad habit heavyminussign Set up Rewards: In addition to the in-game Rewards offered, add activities or treats which you want to use as a motivation to the Rewards column. It's important to give yourself a break or allow some indulgence in moderation!

If you need inspiration for which tasks to add, you can look at the wiki's pages on Sample Habits, Sample Dailies, Sample To-Dos, and Sample Rewards.

Step 2: Gain Points by Doing Things in Real Life

Now, start tackling your goals from the list! As you complete tasks and check them off in Habitica, you will gain Experience, which helps you level up, and Gold, which allows you to purchase Rewards. If you fall into bad habits or miss your Dailies, you will lose Health. In that way, the Habitica Experience and Health bars serve as a fun indicator of your progress toward your goals. You'll start seeing your real life improve as your character advances in the game. Step 3: Customize and Explore Habitica

Once you're familiar with the basics, you can get even more out of Habitica with these nifty features: * Organize your tasks with tags (edit a task to add them). * Customize your avatar by clicking the user icon in the upper-right corner. * Buy your Equipment under Rewards or from the Shops, and change it under Inventory > Equipment. * Connect with other users via the Tavern. * Starting at Level 3, hatch Pets by collecting eggs and hatching potions. Feed them to create Mounts. * At level 10: Choose a particular class and then use class-specific skills (levels 11 to 14). * Form a party with your friends (by clicking Party in the navigation bar) to stay accountable and earn a Quest scroll. * Defeat monsters and collect objects on quests (you will be given a quest at level 15).

Your habitca dashboard consists of:

You begin at level 1.

Tasks

Tasks are the main pulse of your role. Everything else is optional.

  1. Habits

Actions that you want to reward or discourage and that you don't do on a regular schedule. Examples: take a stretching break (positive) or chew your nails (negative).

  1. Dailies

Actions you want to do once a day or on certain days of the week. At the end of each day, you will take damage for uncompleted Dailies. Examples: Go to bed on time (every day) or do laundry (every Saturday).

  1. To-Dos

One-time or infrequent activities. Examples: Send dad a birthday card or pick up package at post office.

  1. Rewards

Treats, indulgences, and other rewards. You can purchase these with the gold you get for completing tasks. Rewards can be in-game (e.g., better armor) or real-life (e.g., buying a new book). Available in-game Rewards will automatically be added to the Rewards section, and real-life Rewards can manually be added.

Quests

Quests are story-based missions in which a party either fights a boss or collects items.

Quests are initiated when a user invites their party to a quest and begins once all members have responded to the invite.

The quest contributor or group leader can override this, beginning or canceling a quest at their discretion.

To start a quest, players need a quest scroll. Most quests can only be purchased at the Quest Shop with gold or gems, though some quests are obtained for free when a player creates an account, invites their party to a quest, reaches a Daily Check-In Incentive milestone, or completes a quest in a quest line. Once obtained, quests are stored in a player's item inventory.

A quest progresses as party members complete tasks (both Dailies and To-Dos) and perform good Habits. In boss quests, party members can also take damage from uncompleted Dailies. A quest ends when the party drains the boss of health or finds all items, at which point participating party members receive a Reward. These may include gold, experience, equipment, pets, mounts, food, eggs, hatching potions, or other quests. Rewards on completion are not dependent on the size of the party, and every party member who has begun the quest will receive the same rewards no matter the size of their individual contribution.

Quests can be an important motivational tool. They provide a long-term, in-game goal that encourages players to log in and complete tasks every day.

Quests increase accountability: In boss quests, a player's missed Dailies cause additional damage to themselves and party members.

Quests provide positive reinforcement, in that completed Dailies, To-Dos, and good Habits increase boss damage or collection item drop chance.

Players are therefore penalized for missing Dailies, yet also rewarded for completing them. Many quests also reward players with food, eggs, and hatching potions, which otherwise are mostly received as random drops. This allows players to hatch pets and raise them into mounts faster. Last, quests give access to exclusive equipment other than the standard class equipment. These pieces can be worn as a costume or equipped to boost a player's stats.

There are many strategies among parties for how best to win quests. Bigger parties may have an easier time completing certain quests, but as the number of players participating in the quest increases, the risk of being damaged by another player's missed Dailies in a boss battle increases as well. Currently, there is a limit of 30 players to a party, but it has been reported that having more than about a dozen players in one party might create browser performance problems. It is recommended that your party have no less than four members in order to make quests achievable and to maintain a high level of accountability.
