Fishing

What I learned about business after fishing in Alaska

When we are fishing, there are premade sandwiches. Nothing fancy, but the give us the energy we need. You don't linger eating your lunch and you never take a break to eat when the fish are biting!

And you never know when the fish might start biting, but when they do, you want to be sure your pole is in the water!

We went fishing. The guide baited hook and took us to the best fishing spots. He knew where to drop our lines.

The fish finder gave us some indication how deep the fish were. More often than not, the fish were only 15-30 feet down.

He took us there, but it was up to us to catch the fish. If we got a fish bite our bait, we had to use our skills to hook it.

If you reacted to quickly, you usually lost the fish after they bit your bait. You'd end up over reacting and pulling the bait right out of the fishes mouth.

How is this like business?

Everyday, I go fishing. I put my reel out with bait, hoping for a bite. The bite usually comes in the form of a phone call or email.

I am a guide to my clients - they trust me to take them to the best spots to catch fish (readers). Over the years, I've developed a sense of where to fish and this is one of the reasons they hire me.

But I need to also give my clients advice on how to fish. How to hold their rods and reel in. How to wait just long enough, but not be overly eager.
