Smart Quotes?

For authors: Smart (or curly) quotes match market standards and makes for a more polished manuscript. Here is a quote from Butterick’s Practical Typography on the issue:

Straight vs. curly quotes. Butterick’s Practical Typography states "Straight quotes are the two generic vertical quotation marks located near the return key: the straight single quote ( ' ) and the straight double quote ( " ). Curly quotes (“ ” ‘ ’ ) are the quotation marks used in good typography.

Curly single: ‘ and ’
Straight single: '

Curly double: “ ”
Straight double: " "

Different version of curly quotes: ❛ ❜ ❝ ❞
